Mystery Muck, likely from someone's food. Notice how the substance is dry and crusted onto the book’s cover. Other smears on the cover are from other sources of dirt. We were able to clean the book by scraping this material off with a sharp knife, then wiping the book with a rag dampened with rubbing alcohol.
