This black mold is growing in numerous colonies throughout the book. Any given colony was quite small, however, which is likely why it was not noticed sooner. Note how there is a darker region in the middle of each area of mold growth. The darker areas are gritty to the touch, indicating the mold was producing spores from the center area, while surrounding hyphae spread to colonize the rest of the book.
