Marks like these are generally caused by dirt that accumulates inside books over time. Friction from books being moved on and off the shelves (with associated movements, however slight, between the pages within adjacent books) rubs the dirt into the pages and creates these wear patterns. This book had no odor, and no signs of moisture damage or presence (the pages did not feel cool to the touch). In cases like this, it is important to include investigation of other parts of the book when drawing conclusions about the presence or absence of mold. |
