Assess the Damage

First, determine how wet the book is. For example, if just the cover is damp, Drying the book off and setting it up to dry – preferably in a space that gets sunlight – may be enough. You will need to decide whether what you have is a damp book that will dry on its own with sun treatment, or a truely wet book that will need more attention. If the book is wet, proceed to step 2. If merely damp (for example, the pages are cool to the touch but not clearly water-logged), skip to step 3, Desiccation Chamber and Sun Treatment.
